ETonline: Looking back on season one, how do you feel the promise of the series lived up to what made it to the screen?
Matthew Rhys: I was very proud of the season and that can be rare for me to say. I’ve said this a lot, but the greatest attraction for me was the relationship between Phillip and Elizabeth and the arc played out the way I hoped it would. I think that took a number of lovely, rollercoaster-istic twists and turns as they navigated the mire that is this complicated relationship. They tended to miss each other at those key moments and that push/pull keeps it interesting for both the audience and the actor.
ETonline: Obviously Elizabeth & Phillip’s marriage is the core, but I found his relationship with Martha equal parts exhilarating and devastating. Clearly she loved him deeply, but, from your point of view, was any of that real for Phillip?
Rhys: In my mind it was a ruse the entire time. He’s so invested in what’s happening with Elizabeth, so when he voices that defection desire in the first episode and sees how much vehemence it’s met with, he’s forced to start playing an incredibly long game if she’s his ultimate goal. And so he backs off everything and kind of lets their own life dictate what will happen in hopes it becomes what he wants it to. And you saw that by the end of the season Phillip could say, “Look at how the net is tightening around us!” The missions almost started to do the talking for him.

A fresh blast of star power has been added to the lineup of presenters for the 67th annual Tony Awards Sunday night, including personalities from the stage, screen, television and … the boxing ring?

Sally Field, who appeared on Broadway in Edward Albee’s The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? in 2002, will be a presenter. Likewise Anna Kendrick, who made her Tony-nominated Broadway debut in 1998 at age 12 in High Society. Also on the list is Jake Gyllenhaal, who took on his first New York stage role this season in the Off Broadway production, If There Is I Haven’t Found it Yet.

Matthew Rhys is sipping an Americano in his local coffee shop in Cardiff as he fights off any imminent signs of jet lag.

It’s just hours since he touched down on home turf from Los Angeles and he has plenty of plans to squeeze into the next few days – from catching up with family and friends to a costume fitting before filming his latest TV role as the iconic Mr Darcy.

But before he does any of that, there’s just one thing on his mind.

“I’m off to Top Gun for fish and chips – I can’t wait,” he smiles, name-checking his favourite takeaway in Whitchurch.

Despite being based in LA for the past seven years, Rhys hasn’t lost touch with his roots and he’s certainly not adopted any Hollywood fitness fads – well, at least not when he doesn’t have to get into shape for work projects.

As he readily admits: “I’m a junk food junkie.”

Which no doubt made it so much tougher for the 38-year-old as he prepared for his latest role as a super-fit, gun-toting KGB spy in new US series The Americans.

Matthew Rhys has been cast as Mr Darcy in a new BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice murder mystery spin-off Death Comes to Pemberley.

The Brothers and Sisters actor will star alongside Anna Maxwell Martin and Matthew Goode, as Elizabeth Bennett and George Wickham respectively, in the drama based on PD James’s novel.

Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens had previously been linked to the role of Mr Darcy.

Rhys said: “Exciting as it is, one of the challenges of a part such as Darcy are the comparisons that will be drawn to those who’ve institutionalised him in the past.

“The beauty of Pemberley is that it is an entirely new and different Darcy six years on. And also, I don’t have to appear from a lake in a white shirt and breeches!”

“Camp” stars award-winning Australian actress Rachel Griffiths (“Six Feet Under,” “Muriel’s Wedding”), who describes the dramedy as “smart and good-hearted.” She portrays Mackenzie Greenfield, owner and director of her family’s bustling yet cash-strapped lakeside getaway.

Mackenzie faces “the biggest crossroads of her life,” Griffiths explains, when she struggles to cope with a messy divorce, a brash son on the verge of manhood, the complexities of new romantic possibilities and the headaches of keeping her beloved business afloat.

Despite the challenges, Mackenzie remains “super positive and slightly naïve,” Griffiths says.
