Greg Berlanti interview

Greg Berlanti doesn’t quite feel a fatherly pride toward Emily VanCamp, but it’s close.

The star of ABC’s “Revenge,” which returns for Season 2 this fall, has said she considers the producer who gave her major series roles in “Everwood” and “Brothers & Sisters” her guardian angel of a sort. And Berlanti — whose Sigourney Weaver-starring USA miniseries “Political Animals” starts Sunday, July 15 — maintains reciprocal affection for VanCamp as she now works for others.

“I could not be happier for her,” Berlanti tells Zap2it. “After I saw the ‘Revenge’ pilot last year and loved it, I called her and told her I felt she hopefully was going to get everything she deserved, in the sense of having a featured role in a show that demonstrated her abilities.”

Still, Berlanti admits with a laugh, “It’s not the easiest thing in the world for me to watch her have romantic scenes. I have kind of an older-brother thing about that, and I can’t strangle the guys. When I auditioned her for ‘Everwood,’ she was in the neighborhood of 14 or 15, so I’ve really known her since she was a little girl.

“It’s really wonderful in this business when great things happen to great people who are also talented,” Berlanti adds. “It gives you the inspiration to keep going, and she’s one of those people. She deserves it all. And she helped me, too.”
